Best Travel Insurance for Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most delicate conditions, and it calls for extra care and precaution, especially when traveling. To protect yourself and your baby, consider getting travel insurance with pregnancy coverage. It can help cover medical costs and other expenses in case of emergencies.

Note: It is safe to seek doctor’s endorsement for travel (in a form of a letter) to avoid the hassle of claiming from insurance and avoiding the risk of getting denied

Although pregnancy related coverage are mostly part of the general exclusions of most insurances, there are still some with pregnancy related coverage or emergency medical expense coverage which includes:

  • unforeseen medical emergencies
  • pregnancy related illness
  • childbirth related conditions

What is not covered:

  • the first trimester of pregnancy (0 to 12 weeks) unless otherwise stated above (Only Allianz’s insurance covers only sudden unforeseen medical complications or emergencies occurring within the first 20 weeks/140 days of your pregnancy)
  • ectopic pregnancy, child birth or still birth;
  • care and treatment for the newborn;
  • abortion or miscarriage unless it is due to an injury;
  • test or treatment relating to fertility, contraception, sterilisation, birth defects or congenital disorders;
  • perinatal mental illness such as depression, anxiety disorders;
  • any treatment for pregnancy which is conceived through medical assistance; or
  • any medical expenses incurred in the country which the insured person is a citizen of or have been permanent residence with the local government.

Conclusion:

Premature birth, emergency cesarean sections, pregnancy-related complications, and extra expenses if you give birth abroad prematurely and have to postpone your return can all be covered by a well-designed travel insurance policy. All insurance policies, however, are not created identically. If you’re in your first 20 weeks of pregnancy, Allianz Insurance could be a great option for you. After first 20 weeks of pregnancy, Singlife seem to be the only insurer that covers Trip cancellation or Trip disruption due to unforeseen pregnancy or childbirth conditions. Based on the policy summary, it does provide the most comprehensive coverage. All exclusions stated above applies. Other insurers like Etiqa, may cover that with the combined limit, but it is not specifically written in their policy summary for pregnancy cover, so I would avoid it for pregnancy coverage.

Finally, I would recommend going for higher tier policy to ensure sufficient coverage. Travel insurance for pregnant women should be viewed as a safety net in case of unanticipated problems. For safety reasons, especially in the first trimester, definitely consider getting a doctor’s approval before traveling. This is not financial advice and do take time to read through the policies before making a purchase.
